Together Mary-Ellen Azem and Susan Karsten work cooperatively with Carissa O'Gara Unit A Reading Specialist to address the needs of children in Grades K-2 who require individual or small group assistance in order to access the general curriculum. Some children need more services in terms of specialized instruction while others simply need more time and opportunities for practice.
As the Special Education Teacher, Mrs. Azem works directly with children with Individual Education Plans and provides consultation to classroom teachers in terms of instructional modifications and accomodations. With expertise in assessment, Mrs. Azem also serves as an evaluator throughout the district.
In her role as the Learning Resource Teacher for Grades K-3, Mrs.Karsten works with students in the areas of Reading and Mathematics both within the classroom as well as in individual and small group tutoring sessions. With her years of experience in successfully teaching young children, Mrs. Karsten further enhances our program by providing enrichment services for students whose skill level exceeds that of the grade level curriculum. Mrs. Karsten's position insures that effectiveness of direct instruction in Mathematics will be maximized due to small group size in the 1st - 3rd grade classrooms.
