The Characteristics of Service-Learning by

*Links to academic content and standards
*Involves young people in helping to determine and meet real, defined community needs
*Is reciprocal in nature, benefiting both the community and the service providers by combining a service experience with a learning experience
*Can be used in any subject area so long as it is appropriate to learning goal
*Works at all ages, even among young children
Prior to 1999 Service Learning at Moultonborough Academy was on an informal basis. Activities were centered in the Middle School and consisted of day long events with the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. In July of 1999 Andrew Coppinger was hired as the Principal of Moultonborough Academy, Coppinger, a long term Service Learning advocate sought to establish a more formal Service Learning program at the school.

In addition, non profit groups in the community were approaching the Academy on a regular basis with requests for assistance with their needs. Based on the need raised by the community groups and the wish of the Academy to establish formal Service Learning a committee of both groups was formed. The committee consisted of Academy faculty. Moultonborough Historical Society members, Loon Center personnel and staff from the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. The end result of the work of the committee was to apply for, and receive, a three year Federal Grant.{ later extended to four years } Known as a CHESP grant, the grant was administered by the NH Department of Education. The three community non profit agencies on the committee would become the first three Service Learning Community Partners.
Out of the work of the committee came the idea that Service Learning would enhance the academics of the students while not increasing the workload of involved teachers. To reach this goal, a part time Service Learning Coordinator was hired in the year 2000.
Although no longer grant funded Service Learning continues at Moultonborough Academy. The School District has picked up the cost of the part time coordinator and associated costs of the program. Service Learning includes programs and partnerships that involve students at the Academy in every grade level, as involvement is mandatory at the Middle School level and voluntary at the High School level
