Wellness Advisory Committee (WAC) Meeting Minutes
April 15, 2009
In Attendance: Cassie Coons, Lydia Eaton, Jennifer Galea, DeeDee Howard, Linda Isabelle, Mike Lancor, Carolyn Nelson, Cathy Nilson, Cheryl Simard, Frances Strayer, Matt Swedberg, Donna Tatro and Carla Taylor
Members Unable to Attend: Mary Beth Carleton, Chris Faro, Art Grady, and Denise Trexler
Lydia Eaton and Jennifer Galea convened the meeting at approximately 2:40 p.m. in Room 105 in Moultonborough Academy.
Nutrition:
The Nutrition Subcommittee met on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. and the minutes were reviewed by the WAC. Actions to be taken as a result of the subcommittee discussions include:
• Mike Lancor will place the District Wellness Policy on the agenda for the School Board Policy Committee meeting in May for revision.
• Café Services will distribute bimonthly newsletters during the 2009-2010 school year. Discussion took place about options for distributing the newsletters to parents or students. Consensus was to send home one hard copy per family at MCS. Frances Strayer will post on the District website. Mike Lancor will speak to Mr. Coppinger about how best to distribute to MA parents.
• Café Services and the Wellness Committee will set up a Nutrition Information Bulletin Board in the MCS cafeteria.
Physical Activity:
• Subcommittee members will be Cassie Coons, Matt Swedberg and Mike Lancor. They will review the Wellness Policy Profile to assist with Board policy revision.
• Wellness Walk Day is May 27 at both MCS and MA. Carla Taylor, Donna Tatro, Mary Beth Carleton and Cassie Coons will organize the event at MCS. Mike Lancor, Cheryl Simard and Matt Swedberg will organize this event for MA. Plans for the two schools will be emailed to all WAC members.
• The wellness walks out of seven (7) MA study halls began on Monday, April 6. Walks are taking place every block except E Block.
• Hillary Bride is being trained to implement a program designed to prevent obesity through the Recreation Department.
• PE requirements for 9th and 10th graders will remain the same in 2009-2010. Students in grade 9 will continue to take PE daily.
• Emphasis needs to continue at MCS to have all students go out during recess.
• Cassie stated that MCS will be doing a jog, walk, etc. across the United States starting next week. All students will log miles for the entire school body.
Wellness Policies:
It was decided that the WAC will review the Model School Wellness Policies document produced by the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity. This item will be placed on the early part of the agenda for May 14, 2009.
Next Meeting:
The WAC will meet from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. in the SAU conference room on Thursday, May 14, 2009.
