Wellness Advisory Committee
Recommendations
June 10, 2008
Committee’sCharge: To assess thenutrition and physical activity environment throughout the District and makerecommendations to the Board for a comprehensive wellness program that includesgoals for nutrition education, physical activity and other school-basedactivities that are designed to promote student wellness.
1. NutritionRecommendations:
a. BySeptember 15, 2008, distribute to classroom teachers the existing K-6 health(wellness) curriculum.
b. By October 1, 2008, survey MCS teachers forcurrent practices regarding: a)the teaching of wellness or nutrition curriculum lessons, and b) planned fieldtrips to farms, markets, museums etc. that have a focus on fruits, vegetables,nutrition and wellness.
c. ByOctober 15, 2008, develop a schedule of field trips to farms, markets, museums,etc. that have a focus on fruits, vegetables, nutrition and wellness.
d. By September 1, 2008, administration will make water available forfree in the cafeterias at lunch time.
e. By September 10, incoming 7th graders will have anorientation to the cafeteria food options.
f. For 2008-2009 school lunches, Café Services will coordinate withWellness Advisory Committee members to:
• usewhole grains,
• havea maximum of 1/3 of calories from fat for any given full meal selection,
• offer raw veggies (or slightly blanched) andfruits instead of cooked whenever possible, and
• use other healthy substitutions for high fatitems (or not well received items).
g. By October1, 2008, the Wellness Committee will develop/identify parent information flyersabout breakfast ideas, snack suggestions, and low budget meals. Selected flyers will be sent home withthe MCS Weekly and highlighted in PawPrints.
h. ByNovember 1, 2008, the Wellness Committee will create a wellness page on the
District website.
2. PhysicalActivity Recommendations:
a. Beginningwith the 2009-2010, students in grades 9 and 10 will receive a half credit ofPE each year rather than thecurrent full credit earned in grade 9. Elective HS PE courses would beavailable to students in grades 11 and 12. Administration will explore various scheduling options toimplement this recommendation for 2009-2010.
b. BySeptember 15, 2008, offer outdoor walking opportunities for students in studyhalls (MA) or during recess (MCS) for 20 minutes three times per week. Students would sign up to be part ofeach block’s walking program and staff members would supervise walking club asan extra-curricular assignment equivalent to one factor per quarter.
c. Encouragethe offering of after school activities or extracurricular activities at MA inaddition to interscholastic athletics. Students would be surveyed after athletics signups for each of the threeseasons. Examples of recentextracurricular activities approved at MA include Fishing Club and Outing Club.
d. BySeptember 1, 2008, administration will schedule recess before lunch atMCS.
e. Beginningin September 2008, MCS teachers and staff will avoid scheduling extra help,makeup time, activities, computer time, clubs, etc. during recess times toafford all students the opportunity to go outside and exercise daily.
3. WellnessRecommendations:
a. ByDecember 1, 2008, the administration and School Board will consider includingin the 2009-2010 budget funds to provide wellness (health) instruction forgrades K to 5.
b. Our groupreviewed multiple sample wellness policies and concurred that the NationalAlliance for Nutrition and Activity had a comprehensive Model School WellnessPolicy worth further consideration by the 2008-2009 Wellness AdvisoryCommittee.
