Wellness Advisory Committee Meeting
Tuesday, April 29, 2008
SAU Office – 3:00 p.m.

Mike Lancor reviewed the primary charge of this committeewhich is to assess the nutrition and physical activity environment throughoutthe District and make recommendations to the School Board for a comprehensivewellness program.
 
The first portion of the meeting involved brainstorming alist of the following programs and activities currently in place in theDistrict related to nutrition, physical activity and wellness.
 
• MCS extra curricular programs before or afterschool include Stay and Play (fall), Rad Ropes Jump Rope Club (winter),X-country Skiing (winter), Gymnastics (winter), and Winter Days.  A Walking Club has been organized inpast years.
 
• MA Outing Club
 
• MA Athletics Program (Approximately 50% ofstudents in grades 7 to 12 participate each of the three seasons.)
 
• The grade 6 PACH Program which is comprised ofthree areas:
* ProjectAdventure (Cassie Coons & Terry Dempsey) – A six week program consisting ofteam building activities and making appropriate choices.
* Choices(Frances Strayer) – A six week program consisting of making appropriatechoices, peer pressure and substance abuse issues.
* Health(Linda Isabelle) – A six week program consisting of anatomy and physiologylessons, making healthy choices with nutrition, exercise and stress management.
* Thethree six grade classes rotate through the three areas.
 
• Height, weight and vision screening for allstudents in grads K to 6.  Thisallows the school nurse to determine each student’s body mass index.  Approximately 10% of the students atMCS are overweight with the majority of overweight students being in grades 3to 6.
 
• High school students only required to have onephysical over four years to participate in athletics.  Height and weight are not measured for students in grades 7to 12.
 
• All MCS students have recess at lunchtime.  Students in readiness,grades 1 and grade 2 have a 15 minute recess in the morning (weatherpermitting).
 
• Columbia Teen Screen voluntarily taken by35-50% of students at selected MA grade levels.
 
• PE classes at MCS for each class are:
* 1 x 40mins. for (.5) day kindergarten
* 2 x 30mins. for grades R, 1 and 2
* 1 x 50mins. for grades 3, 4, 5 and 6
 
• PE classes at MA are:
* 2 or 3times/week x 45 mins. for grades 7 and 8
* 1 creditrequired between grades 9 and 12
* Electivecredit in PE available
 
 
• Health classes at MA required:
* 2 or 3times/week x 45 mins. for grades 7 & 8
* 1 creditfor all grade 10 students
 
• Project Safeguard programs for grades 7 and 10
 
• K-6 health curriculum has been written, butthere is no designated teacher.
 
• MTA sponsored activities (e.g. Spring IntoAction, Chem Free Prom Party)
 
Mike Lancor distributed an email and letter from CaféServices, along with copies of HB-1435, which if passed will require newimplementation procedures for the sale of food and beverages in publicschools.  This legislation encouragesschools to sell foods as complete meals in compliance with the federal mealsprogram guidelines.  Fruit,nonfried vegetables, legumes, beverages, dairy products and grain products canbe sold as individual items.  Thesenutrition standards will apply to all foods outside of the school meals programmade available to pupils from the beginning of the school day to the end of theschool day.  School-associatedgroups or other members of the school community sponsoring food relatedactivities shall be encouraged to follow the nutrition standardswherever possible.
 
The committee members present decided to divide into threeworking groups for the next meeting to begin at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20 inthe SAU Office.  The focus of eachgroup, as well as group membership, are as follows:
 
1. Nutrition:  Work group members Lydia Eaton, Maura King, DeeDee Howardand Denise Trexler will:
a. Review Café Services offerings at MA and MCS and recommendadditions, changes or deletions in the complete meals offerings and a la cartitems.
b. Develop nutrition guidelines for other foods brought into school forspecial occasions (e.g. birthdays), holiday parties, etc.  A plan for disseminating theseguidelines to parents will also be developed.
 
2. Physical Activity:  Work group members Cassie Coons, MikeLancor, Cathy Nilson and Matt Swedberg will:
a. Review current physical activity offerings and recommend revisionsor changes (include PE class offerings).
b. Identify additional after school physical activity programs thatcould be implemented with a focus on the 50% of MA students who do notparticipate in athletics each season.
 
3. Wellness:  Work group members Lisa Baker, Linda Isabelle, CarolynNelson and Frances Strayer will:
a. Review existing wellness programs and curriculum and recommendrevisions or changes.
b. Identify additional wellness programs or activities that could beimplemented with a focus on grade levels that do not currently have wellnessevents, programs or activities in place.
 
All Wellness Advisory Committee members unable to attendthis meeting will be invited to attend the May 20 meeting and to serve on oneof the three work groups.
 
During the committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 3,the three work groups will share suggestions in an effort to reach consensus onspecific recommendations for the 2008-2009 school year.
