Athletic Committee Minutes
September 4, 2008
In Attendance: Kathy Garry, Fox Smith, Andy Coppinger, Harry Blood
The meeting began at 7:30 a.m. in Mr. Coppinger’s office.
1. Cooperative Hockey Team – Harry provided the committee with the Ice Hockey proposal for the next two year cycle. This needs to be acted on and then reviewed by the
NHIAA for approval for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years. The committee endorsed the re-application of the Cooperative Ice Hockey team but left the funding and budgeting aspects of the proposal for consideration by the full Board as part of the budgeting process.
2. Volunteer Coaches - Harry asked that Laurie Cotter for middle level girl’s soccer and Angela Nieland for varsity girl’s soccer be approved as volunteer coaches for the fall 2008 season. The Committee approved both recommendations.
3. Golf Fundraiser – Mr. Blood presented a request to allow the Golf Team to get involved in a fundraiser called “Beat the Pro” that would involve members of the golf team soliciting people to buy raffle tickets for a chance to play against the Ridgewood golf pro. The Committee endorsed this request going to the full School Board for approval.
4. Updates – Mr. Blood commented that the gym floor is done and looks great. The Baseball field also has been finished and the grass is growing. Mr. Blood and Coach Mike Christy have done some work on the softball complex to create a much improved pitching warm up area on the visitor’s side and to beautify the approach area to the softball fields. Mr. Blood also expressed his view that the field mowing and maintenance continues to be
sub-standard.
5. Scheduling – The issues of fuel costs and loss of instructional time are combining to put pressure on sports schedules as never before. The superintendents association has gotten involved and the athletic directors are trying to take some pro-active steps to address the concerns. Class S has dropped the north-south game for this year’s basketball season. The NHIAA is also looking into allowing more cross-class
scheduling to reduce travel distances. MA would certainly benefit from playing more Lakes Regions games, but a system would have to be set up so as not to punish Class S schools who play a Class M or Class I school.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30 a.m.
